How to Measure Windows for Draperies

Width
1. Measure the width of each window, including molding or trim if you want the drapery to cover them.
2. Determine the number of panels you need to order:
~ Multiply window width by 1.5 to 2 if you want draperies loosely gathered for a relaxed, tailored look. Divide your total by the width of a single drapery panel to get the number of panels you need.
~ Multiply window width by 2.5 to 3 if you want draperies tightly gathered for a full, luxurious look. Divide your total by the width of a single drapery panel to get the number of panels you need.

Note: When buying ready made draperies be sure to check the stores definition of width. The width may refer to a single drapery panel, even when they are sold in pairs.

Length
1. For a classic look, your drapery rod should be mounted 4" above the window opening, so measure from 4" above the window opening to approximately 1/2" above the floor to get drapery length.

2. If you want your drapes to create a grand "puddle" on the floor, add 6" to 8" to the length.

3. To create the impression of greater height in the room, position the rod 2" to 3" below the ceiling. Remember, this approach will likely expose the top edge of the window opening and some of the wall above it -- if you want them covered, position the rod at the standard height.

Note: Generally the length of rod-pocket draperies is the distance from the top of the rod pocket to the bottom of the hem. It does not include ruffles or other decorative elements above the pocket.
The length of tie-top draperies is generally the distance from the top of the panel to the bottom of the hem. It does not include the ties.
The length of tab-top draperies is the distance from the top of the tab to the bottom of the hem.

Hardware

Rods are typically positioned 4" above the window. Rod length should be the same as the total fabric width. Add the length of two finials to rod length to get the total amount of space
required.

Another Season of Design Star!

We are all awaiting the new season of Design Star; will this show have the same atmosphere as the first show? The success of the first show has undoubtedly brought a more competitive group of candidates, how will this affect this show. Will Design Star become another of the reality shows that features the bad mannered in fighting that we have come to accept in other reality shows?

I hope this show does not go there. I loved the first show because it concentrated on design. It did create a scramble for the participants to produce a viable product in a short amount of time. But those who stuck with their ideals prevailed. The last two candidates actually created an ambiance that sparked added interest in the show. The spin-off show Color Splash is a breathe of fresh air; everyone loves David, a talented designer with a great personality. It was a great show and they certainly picked the right candidate. The show premieres tonight!!

Tips for finding those unusual decorator accents for your home.

Today, more than ever, we want our homes to reflect more of our personality and personal taste. It is often hard to find those unique pieces of furniture or accessories that
transform ‘a room’ into that unique space that offers comfort, design, good taste and add character and style to your room.

One way to start is to look at the many TV shows that offer help to the homeowners with ideas and planning for decorating their homes and yards. These shows can be a good place to start when searching for ideas to plan your space and find your style. Once you have a sense of what you are after the shopping quest begins.

Stick to your plan, do not get side tracked by an item that will not work with what you want to accomplish. We often see a piece we love but it will not go with the room for any number of reasons, and feel compelled to buy it. Think twice about this purchase,
will it change the functionality of the space? Will it look out of place? Perhaps you will need to change your plan to accommodate this piece, if so give it careful thought, and only purchase the piece if you can see how it will work within your space.

If you are looking for ideas for a complete room setting go to your local furniture store or look online at the furniture manufacturer’s websites. You can view hundreds of styles and room settings on their websites. Shopping online for their products is easy and may often save you thousands of dollars.

Look online for the accessories and furniture, search by manufacturers name such as ‘Uttermost mirrors’, searching by products, vases, wall art, lamps, etc will return thousands choices. Look for the sites that offer customer service, or try shopping sites like Amazon and Ebay. Shop the independent websites for unique products that add character and style to your room and offer larger selections than you could find at a local store, htt://www.tohomeshop.com features over 1200 products with very competitive pricing.

Take at look at the custom products such as upholstered furniture using your fabrics or custom window treatments designed to your specifications and with your fabric choices.
These can make your room stand out and add distinction to your space.

I am constantly searching for new and unusual products. Please comment on the types of home products that you have an interest in obtaining.

I am heading to Italy this fall for a buyers trade show. I will be looking for pottery, garden statuary, designer pieces and tabletop items. The Tuscan style and traditional styles work well for me. What about modern and the eccentric styles that are so fashionable in Italian designs will they work in the US?

Whats your Style

Hi,

Do you have a decorating style? Want to share your insights, your designs, your thoughts?

My style is somewhat eclectic. Some people think that eclectic style means, no style at all or is just a name for throwing things together. Contrary to this belief the eclectic style is a coordinated mix of the many pieces that we collect in our homes. The internet contributes to the popularity of this style, the sourcing of products for the home are global. We are not limited to what we can find, it is all at our fingertips.

Please tell me about your style, your favorite things, where you find them, anything you might want to share.

Regards,
Thoughts of Home
